The Great Gator 5K and Kid’s Fun Run

Reminders for the Great Gator this Saturday!

As we are approaching the big day, here are a few details you will need to know:

Online registration will close Wednesday the 23rd at 6pm. After that, you will only be able to register during packet pickup on Friday (see below for times) or the morning of the race starting at 8am. We will accept cash (exact change preferred) or credit card. Race fees on Friday or Saturday morning will be:

5k Adult: $35
5k Child: $30
Fun Run: $15

Packet Pickup will be Friday, April 25th from 4-7pm at Swift Creek Elementary in the cafeteria.  The packets include your T-shirts, swag bag, your bib numbers that you will pin on your shirt for the race, as well as information like the course map and parking info. We strongly recommend you come by and pick these up on Friday. The next morning will be busy and hectic so picking up your packets the day before is a huge time saver.

The Fun Run obstacle course begins at 8:30am and the 5K will start at 9:30am. Get there early to ensure time for parking and getting to the start line. Parking on site at Swift Creek Elementary is at a premium. Please plan to carpool if possible.  If SCES parking is full, additional parking is available at St. Ledger’s Pool or the surrounding neighborhoods. Last year the parking situation went very smoothly with many of you walking, riding bikes or carpooling to save space.  Following the 5k will be a festive after party with DJ, local vendors, an amazing balloon artist, snacks and drinks, and of course, the pie in the face contest!

NEW this year!  Cheer Posters and Finish Line Confetti for sale! Create your own Cheer Poster using our cool template.  These poster boards can be purchased in the main event area for $1.  Markers are provided.  Finish Line Confetti in colorful GREEN and YELLOW is also available for sale!  Get a baggy or two to toss at your family as they come across the finish line!  Pie in the Face raffle tickets will be sold throughout the morning culminating in the BIG PIE event at 11am. SPECIAL DEAL: $5 for 3 Pie In Face Raffle Tickets, bag of Finish Line Confetti and 1 Cheer Poster!

Race Finish Times: The 5k will be using chip timing this year to record finish times and place winners. You will get your bibs at packet pickup. All race participants must pin race bibs on the front of your shirt. Walkers and those with baby strollers should position themselves near the back of the starting line-up. The approved 2014 course map for the Gator 5k is online here. Note that we will be shutting down a portion of Genito Rd at the beginning of the race. We will have police officers on site to handle traffic at key portions of the race.

About the Great Gator 5k

Our 3rd annual Great Gator race will be April 26th, 2014. Early-bird registration will begin February 1st. We are excited to announce that we will be working with Commonwealth Timing so we can accommodate the many runners that support our race. Our new course map has been approved! This year we will be running on Genito road to help disperse the runners at the beginning of the race. We will be closing Genito during this portion of the run and there will be multiple police officers posted.

Our race is funded by sponsor donations and runner entry fees. Please consider sponsoring this event. We had 500 runners last year, not to mention all the spectators and families present. About The Great Gator Race to the Future

Swift Creek Elementary School hosted the second annual Great Gator 5K and Kid’s Fun Run on Saturday, April 27th 2013. We will have the next one April 26th, 2014.

The course will traverse the roads and pathways of Brandermill, beginning and ending at the SCES campus. This event will focus on celebrating healthy living as a community while benefiting SCES’ technology initiative.

Thank you to all who have participated, whether by running or volunteering! The proceeds from our 2013 race have been used to purchase:

5 new Promethean Smart Boards for our classrooms 16 Document cameras and 12 Wireless cards

The wireless cards will bring internet service into our classroom trailers, as well as give us additional SOL testing labs. That will cut our SOL testing time by two weeks! All of these will surely have a huge impact on classroom learning.

The Great Gator 5K is funded by sponsor donations and runner entry fees. All profits will fund the purchase of handheld technology that will be used in classroom learning. Many studies have shown the benefits for students who get hands-on learning using these devices as well as other classroom aids such as large touch screens and projectors. Our school is in need of updating its technology; this is not something that Chesterfield County can always provide. By fundraising within the community, we can bridge the gap and help students “Race into the Future” through participation in an increasingly global society.

Race day will include the 5K, a Kid’s Fun Run, and a festive after-race party.We have all ready received a huge, positive response from the school  and surrounding communities. Last year we had over 500 runners! We expect even more this year! In addition to race participants, we expect to welcome families cheering on the runners. This population creates an amazing opportunity for businesses to reach a wide audience.

In an effort to reduce expenses and maximize the dollars available to donate to the school, sponsorship opportunities are being offered. Sponsorship can be in the form of cash donations, in-kind donations of food, prizes, give-aways or race-team participation. Several levels of sponsorship are available with many providing advertising during the race. Sponsors will also have the option to purchase a booth at the race. Children are welcome and encouraged to participate; parents will need to supervise their children on the 5K course. It is recommended that an adult accompany younger children. A 20 minute Kid’s Fun Run is available on the SCES campus for ages 12 and under.

The Great Gator 5K is a community-wide event. All are encouraged to join the fun. Runners/walkers with strollers are welcome on the 5K course. In consideration of the safety of all participants, no animals, skateboards, bikes, scooters or skates will be allowed in the official race area.

The Kid’s Fun Run race entry fee includes a race t-shirt. 5K participants will receive a t-shirt, medal and a swag bag filled with various freebies from sponsors. Please note: You must register by April 10th to be guaranteed a Race Shirt!

Registration will be online only. Space permitting, race day registration may be available but those runners are not guaranteed a shirt and will be placed in the last starting wave regardless of runner pace.
